Part-time/permanent

Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire is looking for Volunteers to support our Carbon Monoxide Advice Project.

Volunteers will identify and advise local people of the potential lethal dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) and what to do if they think they might be affected.

CO poisoning is responsible for 40 deaths and around 4,000 A&E visits in England and Wales each year. It is odourless and therefore CO poisoning can be difficult to identify.

The role involves adhering to Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire’s vision, mission and values which includes offering a free and confidential advice service.

You will have:
- An approachable, empathetic, friendly manner
- IT competence (essential)
- Respect for views, values and cultures which are different to your own
- Applicants should be able to commit to giving three hours per week for at least six months. Full training will be provided.

To apply, please email Finance and Admin Manager Amanda Wood below to ask for an application form.

The deadline for applications is 11.59pm on Thursday 4th April 2024.

In 2022-3, Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire helped 4,183 people with 19,625 issues. It saved clients a combined total of £3.8 million. That is the equivalent of £908 back in the pocket of each person it helped.

Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire is a small, local and independent charity and does not receive funding from central government.

Anyone in South Gloucestershire seeking free, independent, impartial and confidential advice from Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire can call 0808 278 7947.

Computer Support Volunteers (ongoing position)

South Gloucestershire’s libraries provide free access to computers, the internet, email and online resources and free Wi-Fi access for all members of the public. Library staff assist the public in using our facilities and when requested can signpost to further local help through our colleagues in the Council’s Community Learning Service, and through courses run by South Gloucestershire and Stroud College in many of our libraries.

Quite often, especially with those new to IT, a more in-depth one-to-one approach is needed and this is where we see a role for computer volunteers. We are thus seeking individuals who:

  • Are competent and confident users of computers, conversant with use of the Internet and email, and are familiar with Microsoft Office software. An ability to manage photos and music downloading, along with an awareness of social networking sites such as Facebook, would also be desirable.
  • Have a general interest in online information sites hosted by the library and an ability to explore these with customers, such as Ancestry and online encyclopaedias.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and customer care skills, are comfortable with people of all ages and backgrounds; enjoy helping others and have patience.
  • Especially encourage those who are afraid of IT, helping them make the most of the services on offer, particularly encouraging individuals to take advantage of online training resources such as www.learnmyway.com
  • Supporting those who are applying for jobs, composing CVs, contacting the Council or using sites such as www.gov.uk and Universal Jobs match.

Volunteering is available at any time libraries are open. You can be as flexible as you like in the pattern of hours you do, and at times that suit you.

Interested in this opportunity? Please ask library staff for an application form to be returned to the librarian or for further information, please contact us by phone or email.

National Garden Scheme - South Gloucestershire

The National Garden Scheme is proud to say that 80% of money raised through opening gardens goes to health charities.

In our area, Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire and Bath there are almost 40 gardens to choose from, all described in the local 'Yellow book.' In South Gloucestershire 7 very different gardens open to visitors providing 'Great Gardens, Great Cakes!' Some will open for groups, at a time to suit you, 'By Arrangement'.

Details of all the gardens can be found on the National Garden Scheme website below, or you can download the smartphone app. On both you can search for gardens opening within the distance you are prepared to travel. So why not go ahead and plan the gardens you would like to visit?

The huge benefits of gardens and gardening to health and well being are now well recognised. You may feel you would like to become involved in this inspiring organisation. It's possible to volunteer in a small way by helping with serving teas, or you may even feel that your own garden could be enjoyed by others. Seeing the pleasure on visitors' faces and sharing your endeavours with others, whilst helping the NGS charities, has a huge 'feel good factor.'
